Evening

Evening is the sharp breath of wind breaking through tree.
Evening is the bright dawn of peace bringing life to the earth
Evening is the closing of books at the end of their stories
Evening is the cold rainfall pouring relief to open wounds
Evening is the slow shutting of even open door
Evening is the still lake beneath the veil of dark skies

This is a poetry exercise that I did in English class. I really enjoyed writing this but it was harder than I expected. I really worked hard to find metaphors that describe what evening is to me. My favorite time of day is the evening just after the sunset, where there are still a few rays of sun shining over the hills behind our house. At this time everything seems so peaceful and wonderful. I just feel like evening is a time of renewing right before the new day. Some people are saddened by the ending of each day but I see it as the promise that a new day is on its way.
