With the end of the third series of one of my favorite shows BBC's new "Robin Hood" being just around the corner I decided to review the rest of the season as a whole.
The series began with the lackluster episode "Total Eclipse" in which the new character of Brother Tuck was introduced. His character was meant to replace the missing Will and Djac but he added neither humor nor wisdom to the gang. The whole first episode consists of Tuck trying to help Robin overcome his anger over the death of Marian which ends in Robin becoming
exaclty like he was in the first series. The episode's plot was too much for it's own good and in the end me and my two siblings were bored and appalled. So what kept me watching? Guy of Gisborne of course! His guilt over the death of Marian was well played out and his performance in the episode was amazing.
The new Gang introducing Kate and Tuck. The next three episodes in the series served the introduce Kate with Gisborne being sent away for two of the three episodes. Without Gisborne the episodes were dull beyond belief and then the worse character in the history of Robin Hood was introduced. Kate became a wannabe Marian with her feisty attitude and horrible imitation hairdos! Instead of possessing the grace and charm of Marian she was downright annoying and whiny! Much and Allen both fell for her the moment they saw her but she seemed to have eyes only for Robin!
Episode 5 "Let the Games Commence" was very well done with the reintroduction of the new Gisborne whom seems more determined than ever to capture Robin Hood. Another Character introduced is Gisborne's sister the beautiful and charming Isabella. Robin rescues her from her pursuers at the beginning of the episode and immediately falls for her. She is very unlike her brother initially, she has heart and spirit! She truly cares for Robin and the people of Locksley. For the next two episodes she shines out along with Gisborne holding the series together then along came Episode 7.
The graceful Isabella. In episode 7 Isabella and Robin's relationship was discovered by Gisborne whom was not pleased to say the least. The episode ended with Isabella revealing how much she was really like Guy with the writers having obvious characterization problems. Within the next few episodes Robin suddenly turns to Kate and Isabella suddenly randomly turns out to be more evil than the old Sheriff of Nottingham.
Prince John is introduced in episode 6 and 7 and he is the most annoying pushy character in the series besides Kate. He is not even funny to watch, he is just bad! He gets the Sheriff and Guy to fight each other which ends in the sheriff's
death. Once he leaves things do get a little better.
Evil in its most annoying form; Prince John.Light beings to shine as a new girl Meg comes into Guy's life while he is in prison. She see's the good in him, reminding him of Marian and how he could be a better man. After that the next few episodes lead him right into becoming a better man. He and Robin discover the share a brother and reluctantly join forces to rescue him. Robin and Guy together take complete command of the show bringing it out of the Prince John and Kate dumps! They learn to trust each other leading them to save their brother and become good friends.
Their brother Archer is as good of a shot with a bow as Robin but he is a money loving scoundrel who wants to leave England forever. He does not like Gisborne and Robin because they both have nothing, having lost their titles. He learns of his rich Sheriff sister Isabella and joins her before having a change of heart to rescue his brothers and join them. He could be a great character if he didn's suffer from the same sudden characterization switch as the other new charaters.
The devious and silly Archer.Overall the series seemed to jump fro one thing to the next. The writers seemed to not know what they wanted as they constantly changed their characters from good to bad, bad to good. The saving grace of the series was Guy whose character was flawlessly played by Richard Armitage. Evey moment of his struggles are easy the belief as we watch him transform from bad to good on screen.
The amazing Guy of Gisborne, outlawed! The series was okay, not great. Kate was annoying and should never have been a love interest for Robin. Tuck was boring. Prince John was annoying. Archer was iffy. Isabella had potential which the writers killed. Guy was amazing. Robin was too much unaffected by Marian. Overall 3/5 stars. A low score in my book.
I don't think I've ever written such a long review but its because I can't wait until tomorrow evenings final episode in which it has been revealed that 3/4ths of the old characters will be killed off. Marian is also set to make an appearance which is what is earning most of my attention! It will be a finale that is a must see!
